Postponing this week's orders

Hi, there. This is Linda, Jay’s wife, writing today. It looks like the influenza has hit our household, including Jay. We don’t want to share these germs with you all. For that reason, we are postponing this week’s market delivery. We will send out a message when he’s up and about again to reschedule the deliveries.

I’m sorry for any inconvenience. Hopefully, your households are healthy and stay that way.

Thanks,
Linda Sleichter

RVP-First Full Market of 2013

2013 is here and we are all full of hope and joy. We are hoping for a much cooler and wetter spring and summer.

This year is going to be bringing a lot of new things. We aren’t planning to do too many different crops, we are planning to do what we do BETTER!

With that said, if there is something you would like for us to grow please let us know. We always are up for a new challenge.

On January 5th, we had our first January market in Manhattan. While there weren’t as many vendors, we had a great day. I was lucky to have two helpers that day. It was fun to have them there, but the 5am wake up call was a little rough.

Here is an image from Google Earth of our “farm” this picture was probably taken in late August to September this year.

About this weeks market. We are low on lettuce right now. We have several hundred small heads of lettuce. They just aren’t ready right now. I am hoping they will be ready in February.

We do have plenty of Kale and Carrots right now. Try something new and get some Kale!

Orders are due by 5pm on Sunday.

Thanks,

Jay

RVP-Happy New Year

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. We have been busy with many projects over the break, I forgot to open the market.

The biggest project I finished was our new carrot washer.

It will greatly decrease the amount of time it takes to wash carrots and other root vegetables.

About our crops, with the extreme cold we have been having as of late, I am not sure how everything has pulled through. I am sure things are ok, but I haven’t pulled off the row covers to make sure. I will know more after today.

Finally, remember pick up this week will be at the Saturday Farmers Market in Manhattan at Pottorf Hall from 8 til 12. Clay Center Produce deliveries will stay on Tuesday.

Thanks,

Jay

RVP- Last market of 2012

This week marks the last order and delivery market in 2012 for RVP. As you, we will be taking a needed break from Christmas to New Years. The market will open up on December 29th, with delivery on Saturday January 5th (at the Saturday Winter Market in Manhattan). Following that, we will go every two weeks. Here is the schedule for January. The market will open the Friday before.

January,
market opens December 29th, delivery on Saturday Jan 5th (Winter market in Manhattan)
Deliveries 15 and 16, 29 and 30
(we do have a winter market in Manhattan on Friday, January 25th)

Thank you for your support over the last year. We truly appreciate your willingness to purchase and consume locally grown products. It has been a challenging year, but we have made it through. With any luck, 2013 will be better.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our families to yours!

RVP-Delivery Calendar and The Market is Open

Hello,

I have two pieces of info your you this week. I wanted to give you a schedule for the next 4 months. As we have done in the past, we will continue weekly until Christmas and then every two weeks after the first of the year.

December, (market opens the Friday before)
Deliveries 11 and 12, 18 and 19

January,
market opens December 29th, delivery on Saturday Jan 5th (Winter market in Manhattan)
Deliveries 15 and 16, 29 and 30
(we do have a winter market in Manhattan on Friday, January 25th)

February,
deliveries 12 and 13, 26 and 27

With baby due at the end of February/ First part of March we will have to keep an eye on these dates.

March,
Deliveries 12 and 13, 26 and 27

April
Deliveries 9 and 10, 23 and 24

May, back to a weekly schedule.

Also, with the lower temps coming on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday please order early to allow me enough time to get everything ready. It has to rise above freezing in the high tunnels in order to harvest. When it starts to get cold, it only gives me a short harvest window each day. If I know what I have to harvest earlier, then I can make better harvest plans.

Finally, last Saturday (after the Farmers Market) I was able to get the last transplants in for this year. It was later than I had wanted, but they are in. I am hoping for a mid to late January harvest time for these crops.

Orders are due by 5 pm on Sunday. Also think ahead, wouldn’t some baked goods be good for Christmas? What about ordering early and putting them in the freezer? That would be a stress free way to get ready for those Holiday meals?

RVP- December Winter Farmers Market in Manhattan

Hello,

I just wanted to remind everyone that the Winter Farmers Market will be this Saturday, December 1st from 8 til 12, in Manhattan. It is at Pottorf Hall at CICO park. If you could share this information with co-workers, church groups, Facebook Friends, Twitter followers, extended family, neighbors, complete strangers, bulletin boards fliers, etc, etc, etc, you get the point. We had lots of produce available, but the customer numbers were down compared to last year. I am just wanting to let as many people know about it as possible. If you know of any way to let others know about the market, please either let me know or feel free to let them know!

Thanks and hope to see you Saturday!

Jay

RVP-Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving

We had a busy Wednesday transplanting with our youngest. She spent the whole afternoon with me. We transplanted more Kale, Swiss Chard, Napa Cabbage, Bok Choy, Mustard, Tokyo Bekana, 11 types of lettuce, Cilantro, and Tatsoi.

Photobucket

Here is one thing that you may not have seen before, The Bright Lights Swiss Chard not only has colored stems, but the roots are colored too. These were to of the plants we put out, a little root bound, but healthy.

As for the market, It will be the Second Winter Market in Manhattan at Pottorf Hall from 8 til 12. We will do the RVP delivery to Manhattan on Saturday. Delivery to Clay Center will be on Tuesday evening, if you order produce, as usual.

Remember orders are due by 5 pm on Sunday.

Hope to see you soon!

Jay
